Mission
Mission
The Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff operates jail facilities providing for the care, custody, and control of incarcerated subjects in Orleans Parish.
The Sheriff executes all writs, orders, and processes of the Traffic, Municipal, and Criminal Courts.
Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff's Office ranked 7th largest in the Nation in inmate population.

History
During the Reconstruction period after the Civil War, there was a separation of the Criminal and Civil Divisions of the judicial system of Orleans Parish which lead to the creation of the only Criminal Sheriff in the United States. The responsibilities of the Criminal Sheriff include care, custody, and control of all the inmates in New Orleans, operation of the City's booking and receiving facility, security for the Criminal District Court, and service of the subpoenas for three different court systems.
